Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Why Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

There are many reasons for having wisdom teeth removed:

The most common reason for having wisdom teeth removed would be an infection or pericoronitis. If the gum has not properly sealed around the base of the tooth, there exists and entryway for pathogens to build up or enter the body.

Cyst Formation:

If the gum has not properly sealed around the tooth, or the tooth has not properly erupted past the gum line, a cyst may form. This is a small sac of fluid that builds up inside the body. This can grow and cause harm to other teeth and irritation while chewing or eating.

Possible Crowding:

If there is not enough room in the patients’ mouth, an impacted wisdom tooth can slowly shift the other teeth out of alignment or cause crowding among the other teeth.

Damage to Adjacent Teeth:

A final and more general reason is that the impacted wisdom tooth may not come in straight and cause harm to nearby teeth and their nerves. Dr. El Deeb can determine if the impacted tooth will cause harm and remove it before any lasting damage is done.

Is it Too Late for Me?

One of the main reasons for having wisdom teeth removed when patients are in their teenage years is that the problems complicate after a long period of time. As adults, wisdom teeth extraction procedures can become extremely complicated and healing takes much longer. If a patient has not had their wisdom teeth removed, an initial examination with Dr. El Deeb should be scheduled immediately to determine what the next course of action is.

What is the Wisdom Teeth Procedure Like?

Wisdom tooth removal procedures vary from patient to patient. Typically, on the day of the procedure, you will receive anesthesia as per Dr. El Deeb’s recommendations. The extraction procedure can take anywhere from thirty to sixty minutes before transitioning to after surgery care. We require that an adult or responsible party accompany the patient to transport them safely home.

We require that the patient refrains from eating or drinking six hours before the procedure. If your surgery included stitches, we ask that the patient does not irritate the stitches for three to five days after the procedure. Please follow the explicit instructions of the doctor after the procedure. Please note that if you have been prescribed antibiotics, they may influence birth control pills’ effectiveness.

Is Wisdom Teeth Extraction Covered By Insurance?
