Recovery Tips From an Oral Surgeon After a Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Having a wisdom tooth extraction is a common dental surgery. It might take a few weeks to recover after the procedure. However, caring for the wound correctly can help you to recover faster. Keep reading to find out more about recovering after a wisdom tooth extraction.

About the wisdom teeth

These teeth are large ones and grow at the back of the mouth. Many times, these teeth come in around the age of 17 to 25. However, some people might not have any of these teeth. There might not be enough room in someone’s mouth for the wisdom teeth to come in correctly.

This means that the teeth might come through the gums with an angle. Or they may only come in somewhat. When this happens, these teeth might be impacted. This can cause issues, such as infections or pain. The amount of time it takes for a wisdom tooth extraction depends on how hard the surgery is.

Speeding up the wisdom tooth extraction recovery process

Blood clots will form where the tooth was removed, and this is vital for healing. These can prevent too much bleeding and help new tissue begin to grow. Patients should avoid moving the blood clots during the first day. This means it is a good idea to:

  • Avoid chewing too much
  • Avoid rinsing or swishing the mouth
  • Not brush the teeth near the extracted tooth
  • Avoid having hot beverages or meals
  • Avoid smoking or drinking alcohol
  • Not use straws

After the surgery

It might be helpful for some patients to use a pain reliever to help with any discomfort afterward. It is important to follow any instructions from the oral surgeon to help with recovery. That might include using an antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection. Right after surgery, patients might bite on a piece of gauze to help stop the bleeding. An ice pack in the first few hours can help to reduce swelling later on. A patient can use it for 15 minutes on and then 15 minutes off.

Keeping it clean

It is vital to keep the area clean during the healing stage. It is necessary to still drink and eat, and food can become stuck in this area. That can make it hard to keep the area very clean. However, an oral surgeon might recommend using an antiseptic mouthwash to prevent an infection.

Using salt and warm water to rinse the mouth might help to soothe the gums. It is good to raise the head during sleep to stay comfortable. Some people might avoid exercise for a few days too. That helps the body to heal.
